Amazing Love 2000
By Audrey Goh

It was the interesting title that caught my eye while I was browsing through the Internet for the latest news on Thailand. The first thought that came to mind was a Millennium Party organized by the government of Thailand. Well, I am not that far off from the truth. After all, the event, officially endorsed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), is indeed a gathering of some sort.

To be held on December 31, 1999 at the Impact Exhibition Center in Muang Thong Thani, Thailand’s Amazing Love 2000 features a group wedding ceremony for 2,000 participating couples (both local and foreign) that are to be wedded in traditional Thai wedding rituals. Apart from these to-be-wed couples, this event is also expected to draw a crowd of over 100,000 relatives and friends into enchanted Thailand to witness the happy occasion.

The mass wedding acts as a form of tourist attraction, featuring wedding related activities such as a wedding festival, a demonstration of traditional Thai wedding ceremonies from the four regions of the kingdom, a Thai Food festival, marriage license registration service, and free concerts from leading music houses.

This auspicious event is organized by the Wedding Business Consultant Co., Ltd., and is held in conjunction with Amazing Thailand 1999, which aims to promote tourists into the country. It would be an excellent end to the year. According to Auggaphol Brickshawana, Director of TAT’s Tourism Resources Development, the purpose of Thailand’s Amazing Love 2000 is to reinforce Thailand’s image as a “world-class honeymoon destination”. This would contribute positively to the country’s overall tourism industry. The government also hopes to attract more foreign tourists to Thailand, especially during the year-end high season. On top of that, the project will help create more jobs and increase income for the tourism industry, as well as wedding and other related businesses.
