The Millennium Extravaganza
By Audrey Goh

How does a legendary Dragon Millennium Celebration sound? Visit Hong Kong and participate in The Millennium Extravaganza, a grand celebration to be held on New Year's Eve of 1999 and early New Year's Day of 2000 at the Happy Valley Racecourse. It promises to be a spectacular countdown with a culmination of light, sound and visual grandiose.

The usual seven horse races will go on from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.. This will be followed by a concert featuring some of the world's prominent international and local artists. The concert is scheduled to begin at 10.30 p.m. Many fun and exciting events are lined up and ready for the coming celebrations. To add to the carnival atmosphere, there will be food bazaars, lantern displays and dragon dances. To usher in the New Year, a mass countdown will be initiated by senior officials accompanied by a spectacular pyrotechnic display. Following that at 12.45 a.m., a Millennium Cup Horse Race (a charity race) will be held together with a millennium sweepstake lucky draw. The activities in store are bound to create much fun and excitement for everyone.

The once-in-a-thousand years event will be broadcast live on several local and foreign TV stations. It is indeed a great opportunity to be able to usher in the New Year. So great is this opportunity that major video walls around Hong Kong are joining in to broadcast the event. Amongst them are the Times Square in Causeway Bay, the Urban Council Centenary Garden and Salisbury Garden in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Grand Millennium Plaza in Sheung Wan, and The Centre in Central.

Admission tickets are for sale but with a certain limit over it. Each member of the public can register for only two ticket packages. Each ticket package will include soft-drinks coupons, a lucky draw ticket, and an admission ticket. The local district offices are readily accessible for further information.
