The southern district is
mainly an industrial area, especially for sake breweries. However, there
are several worthy attractions to visit. For example, there is the Tofuku-ji
Temple, which was founded in 1236 by priest Enni. The temple is regarded
as one of the five main Zen temples in Kyoto and its large Sanmon Gate
is the oldest Zen main gate in Japan. There is also the Fushimi-Inari
Taisha Shrine, which was dedicated to the gods of rice and sake by the
Hata family in the 8th Century. The shrine is one of Japan's most popular
and is the chief shrine for over 30,000 Inari shrines within Japan. The
Tofuku-ji Temple and Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine are the most popular
attractions in the southern district of Kyoto.
