Outdoor Activities

Paragliding

The easiest way to view New Zealand from the air is through paragliding. Floating through the skies with a backdrop of Lake Wanaka is a breathtaking experience not to be missed. A day session would cost around NZ$120.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Winter is especially exciting for the kiwis when they venture up into the snow-covered mountains. Between July and October, as soon as enough snow has accumulated, people flock up for a few days of fun on skis. There are 27 peaks higher than 3,000 meters (9,843 ft), and another 140 exceeding 2,000 meters (6,562 ft). Many ski resorts offer amazing views of green valleys and deep blue lakes.

About 12 private ski club areas are open to the public, but facilities are limited with usually one chair lift going partway up the mountain. However, these are cheaper than the 13 commercial ski centers, most of which are on the South Island. When driving up the mountains, it is advisable to rent chains for your car tires to avoid skidding off slippery corners.

The ski season runs from July to September although it is often extended thanks to artificial snow. Day passes costs between NZ$30 and NZ$40 while equipment can be rented for around NZ$30 a day. The best areas for skiing are on the South Island. However, there is also the Tongariro National Park around the Ruapehu on the North Island.

An interesting and varied itinery for a 10-day skiing tour by car is from Christchurch to Methven, Tekapo, Mount Cook, Ohau (Twizel), Wanaka, and finally Queenstown.

Cross-Country Skiing

The sole place that offers cross-country skiing is Wanaka, near the Alpine ski area of Cadrona, where there are 25km (16 miles) of signposted trails at an altitude of 1,500 meters (4,920 ft). Information on cross-country skiing is obtainable at the Waiorau Nordic Ski Area (03-443 7542).
