Peitou

A few minutes from Taipei is the suburb of Peitou (pronounced bay tow). To get there, simply follow the twisted route from Yangming Shan, or through a less scenic route from Taipei passing the suburb of Tienmou. Fortunately, Peitou would soon be a stop at the MRT's Red Line, so getting there would be much easier.

Peitou, meaning Northern Sojourn, was influenced by Japanese officers and magistrates who converted the town into a resort at the turn of the century. Many Japanese frequent this town to experience its therapeutic hot springs and massages.

Most hotels in the area have hot sulfur-spring water that runs straight from the tap into mini tubs. Massage services are provided after a stimulating dip at the hot tub.

Moving about in Peitou is easy. The main attractions are located close to one another. Most people prefer to walk and enjoy the sights of the town's streets. A walk down a street would take you to Hell's Valley, where the hot springs survive. The medicinal waters that purl through the sulfur-stained rocks are hot enough to boil fresh eggs. Hawker stalls that sell these freshly boiled eggs throng the gates of Hell's Valley.

Chen Memorial Garden

The garden is renown for its peaceful and quiet surroundings. The garden is the pathway that leads up to Phoenix Mountain. Spectacular views of Taipei, Peitou, and the surrounding areas can be seen up on the mountain. This is an excellent trekking site for activity lovers, as there are well-marked signs and four different paths leading to Phoenix Mountain.
