Itinerary

2D / 1N Pkg - Tabin Wildlife Encounter

Day 01
You will be picked up in the east coast town of Lahad Datu and transferred by road to Tabin Wildlife Reserve (1:30 hrs). Check into an attractive timber lodge at Tabin Wildlife Resort, which comes complete with private balcony, air conditioner, ceiling fan and hot water shower, a welcome luxury in the forest. Nestled within the rainforest beside the Lipad river, this lovely setting is home to a surprising variety of birds, insects and small mammals, even right beside the buildings of the resort. Discover the rich variety of jungle herbs, some endemic, used for generations by local folks for the treatment of various ailments.
Visit to Trogon Hall gallery for information about the conservation of Tabin Wildlife Reserve and briefing on birds, insects and animals that is found in this area. (For guest check in before 11:00am)
In the afternoon, visit the active Lipad mud volcano which provides a mineral salt lick for wildlife. After trekking through the rainforest for 20 minutes, arrive at the elevated bare area of the mud volcano which is frequented by wildlife and birds. Try to identify the multitude of animal footprints here. The adventurous can try the effects of the volcanic mud, said to be responsible for a fine complexion. Trek back to the resort along elephant trail.
After dinner, enjoy a CD/Slide presentation on Tabin’s natural wonders, followed by a night safari to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds. Remember to look up at the clear, dark sky of Tabin, identify the constellations above you and make a wish or two. (L,D)

Day 02
You may opt to take up a dawn drive to look out for wildlife that is active at this time of the day (not included in package/RM80.00 per person) or join the early morning bird walk to discover some of Tabin’s rich collection of almost 300 bird species. After breakfast, a drive to the core area for animal’s spotting and for photo session before trekking through the lush green rainforest known for its rich diversity of plants and animal species to visit Lipad Waterfall. Take a dip in the natural pool and enjoy a natural and refreshing shower under the waterfall. Alternatively explore the surrounding vegetation or just relax. After lunch, depart to Lahad Datu (B,L)

Drive from Lahad Datu town to Tabin Wildlife Reserve on gravel road for about one and a half hour. Check into the lodge at Tabin Wildlife Resort, nestled within the rainforest. The lodge comes complete with private veranda, air conditioner, ceiling fan and hot water shower in the forest. Explore the vicinity of the resort and be pleasantly surprised by the abundance of bird life. The open-sided Sunbird Café & Hunter’s place is surrounded by greenery and flowering plants which attract a number of brightly coloured birds. Be entertained by the melodious calls of birds nearby. A bird hide facing the flowing Lipad River is available.
In the afternoon, trek along the Tomanggong Road where you will most likely be able to spot one or more of Borneo’s eight species of hornbill such as the Black, White-crowned, Rhinoceros, Wreathed, Oriental Pied, Bushy Crested, Helmeted and Wrinkled Hornbill either flying in groups across the sky or in pairs perching on bare branches.
After dinner, enjoy a CD/Slide presentation on Tabin’s natural wonders, followed by a night safari to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds. Remember to look up at the clear, dark sky of Tabin, identify the constellation above you and make a wish or two. (L/D)

After trekking through the rainforest for 20 minutes, arrive at the elevated bare area of the mud volcano which is frequented by wildlife and birds. A nearby fig-tree is a busy feasting place for hornbills and other birds and primates during the fruiting season. Across from the observation tower, bare branches of towering trees are favourite perching place for Green Imperial Pigeons and Doves. Try to identify the multitude of animal footprints here. The adventurous can try the effects of the volcanic mud, said to be responsible for a fine complexion.
In the afternoon, try out the Tabin Rainforest Foot Soak made with a natural blend of herbs, to relax tired muscles after long jungle treks.
In the evening, join the dusk drive to look out for more nocturnal bird coming out to look for food during this time of the day.
After dinner, go for a night walk to discover more nocturnal bird species in the nearby trails in search of sleeping birds. (B/L/D)

Day 03
After an early breakfast, you will depart for birding along the road leading to the Core Area of Tabin Wildlife Reserve. The fully regenerated secondary forest with its relatively lower canopy and good natural light provides a delightful birding experience. The incredible rich forests also offer good mammal watching opportunities.
Lunch and then depart from Tabin Wildlife Resort. (B/L)

4D / 3N Pkg - Overnight @ Tabin's Mud Volcano

Day 01
Drive from Lahad Datu to Tabin Wildlife Reserve on gravel road for about one hour.  After registration and a briefing, you will pack the items needed for your night out at Lipad mud volcano. Lunch followed by a short break. You can enjoy the serene environment at the Café and observe birds, small mammals and insects that are active in the vicinity. Embark on your journey to the mud volcano.  After trekking through the jungle for 20 minutes, arrive at the elevated bare area of the mud volcano. Try to identify the multitude of animal footprints belonging to different wildlife. Walk up the observation tower and admire the contrasting landscape of the bare area and its surrounding thick forest where birds are commonly sighted.  Our guides will set up camp for the night at the observation tower.  Stay quiet in order not to disturb wildlife which is more active in the cooler hours of evening and early morning.  Stay alert during the night to observe any visits by wildlife to feed on minerals at the mud volcano. Day 02
After breakfast, pack and return to Tabin Wildlife Resort where you will check into your charming Borneon timber  chalet which comes complete with a private balcony and hot water shower, a welcoming luxury after your night out in the jungle.  Spend the rest of the day  at leisure or stroll in the resort’s vicinity to enjoy nature at its best. After dinner, enjoy a slide presentation on Tabin’s  natural wonders, followed by a trip to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds.  Remember to look up at the clear, dark sky of Tabin, identify the constellation above you, and make a wish or two. (Breakfast,Lunch , Dinner included)

Day 03

After breakfast, stroll to the nearby Rock Pool or wander along the river where groups of  macaques and other small mammals can sometimes be  seen.  Choose to take a dip in the river or simply listen to the sound of nature before saying good bye to Tabin.

Day 01
Drive from Lahad Datu to Tabin Wildlife Reserve on gravel road for about one hour.  Check into a charming timber lodge at Tabin Wildlife Resort, nestled within the rainforest. The lodge comes complete with private veranda and hot water shower, a most welcome luxury in the forest.  Explore the vicinity of the resort and be pleasantly surprised by the abundance of bird life.  The open-sided Sunbird Café is surrounded by greenery and flowering plants which attract a number of brightly coloured birds.   As you sip your coffee, your eyes will be kept busy following active species such as the Black-backed Kingfisher, Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker, Red-throated Sunbird, Malaysian Blue Flycatcher and the Black and Yellow Broadbills. Be entertained by the melodious calls of Black Magpie nearby. A bird hide facing the flowing Lipad river provides a wonderful site for viewing birds.  Huge boulders in the river are a favourite perch for the Oriental Darter, Stork-billed Kingfisher and Lesser Fish Eagle, especially after rain. A happy family of otters have been seen up and down this part of the  river, to the delight of guests. Take a stroll along the road nearby the resort.  White-bellied Munia can be commonly found in the bushes, and a family of large black and chestnut Lesser Coucal sometimes make an appearance here.  The rare Storm’s Storks have made Tabin their home and can sometimes be seen.  You will most likely be able to spot one or more of Borneo’s eight species of hornbill such as the Black, White-crowned, Rhinoceros, Wreathed, Oriental Pied and Wrinkled Hornbill   either flying in groups across the sky, or in pairs perching on bare branches.  Let the guide share with you the tales about the origins of the Helmeted Hornbill’s calls.  After dinner, enjoy a slide presentation on Tabin’s natural wonders, followed by a trip to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds.  The Brown Wood-owl and Savanna Nightjar are some of the species that you may sight along the reserve road.  The Leopard Cat,  Civet cats,  the nomadic Bearded Pig, the Red Giant Flying Squirrel and perhaps even to the Clouded Leopard and Slow Loris might be sighted.   (Lunch , Dinner included)

Day 02
After a simple early breakfast depart for the active Lipad mud volcano with packed lunch. The soccer field-sized Lipad mud volcano serves as a mineral salt lick for wildlife and birds.  The endemic Black and Crimson Pitta has been sighted along the trail leading to the mud volcano.  After jungle- trekking for 20 minutes, arrive at the elevated bare area of the mud volcano where you can try to identify the multitude of animal footprints. The adventurous can try the effects of the volcanic mud, said to be responsible for a fine complexion. Climb the observation tower and admire the contrasting landscape of the bare area and its surrounding thick forest.  Finsch's Bulbul,  endemic Bornean and Black-throated Wren-babblers,  White-crowned Forktail, Dark-throated Oriole, Malaysian Blue Fly-catcher are some of the species that can be seen around the area.  A nearby fig-tree is a busy feasting place for hornbills and other birds and primates during the fruiting season.  Across from the observation tower, bare branches of towering trees are favourite perching place for Green Imperial Pigeons and Jambu Fruit Dove with its wonderful coloured chest.
After dinner, go for a night walk to discover more nocturnal bird species. (Breakfast,Lunch , Dinner included)
 
Day 03
After an early breakfast, you will depart for birding along the road leading to the Core Area of Tabin Wildlife Reserve.  The fully regenerated secondary forest with its relatively lower canopy and good natural light provides a delightful birding experience.  You will be entertained by wild bird songs and the calls of Borneon Gibbons.  On some bare tree trunks,  busy Dollar birds can be found. The Rufous Woodpecker,  Bronzed Drongo, Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot, Speckled Piculet, Chestnut-capped Thrush, White-fronted Falconet, Long-tailed Parakeet, Temminck’s Sunbird, Purple-throated Sunbird and are some of the other species that can be seen .  The abundance of wild ginger plant attracts a variety of colourful birds, including  the Thick Bellied Flower pecker. Picnic lunch will be set up overlooking the river or the valley, a truly enjoyable experience. If time permits, you will trek along the Tomanggong Road where the Giant Pitta has been sighted.    The White-fronted Falconet, Long-tailed Parakeet and Orange-backed Woodpecker as well as other good birds, the Little Spiderhunters, Yellow-rumped Flowerpeckers may also be sighted.  You will most likely be able to observe Long-tailed Macaque and Orangutans along this road.  (Breakfast,Lunch , Dinner included)

Day 04
After breakfast, either relax in Sunbird Café while enjoying more birds in the surrounding garden, or venture to the riverside bird hide to discover further species.   Early lunch and then depart Tabin.   (Breakfast,Lunch included)
