Sarawak and Sabah are a naturalists dream, there are literally thousands of plants, hundreds of birds and a wide variety of wildlife including Proboscis monkeys, Macaques and the famous Orang utan.
In Sarawak there are opportunities to learn about the indigenous culture including overnight in an Iban longhouse where tales of headhunting still abound. We trek the jungle trails in Gunung Mulu, explore one of the world's largest cave systems and ascend the razor sharp limestone Pinnacles. Our adventure continues in Sabah, where we ascend high above the jungle canopy to the summit of Mount Kinabalu (4101m) before wandering the trails through the forest reserves and visiting the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center. We also have time on Turtle Island with a visit to the turtle hatchery.
Itinerary:
- Day 1 Arrive Kuching. Transfer to Hilton Kuching. Dinner & overnight in the hotel.
- Day 2 Breakfast. Depart for full-day Kuching Tour of the city. Set Malay Lunch in an air-conditioned restaurant. Seafood dinner at local seafood centre. Overnight in the hotel.
- Day 3 Breakfast. Depart Miri airport on MH3630hrs etd 0920hrs. Arrive Mulu airport, meet your guide and transfer to Royal Mulu Resort. 1200hrs – Lunch in the resort. After lunch we proceed by van to Park HQ for a visit to Deer and Lang’s Cave. We trek along the plant walk ( 3 km) through the rainforest. Explore the largest cave passage in the world- DEER CAVE and LANG’S CAVE. Relax at the open air observatory for an opportunity witness the phenomenon exodus of BATS out of the caves, spiraling high overhead and ascend to the sky where they will search for food. We then returned to the Park and transfer to the resort. Dinner & overnight in the resort.
- Day 4 Breakfast. Take a morning longtail boat ride to visit Batu Bungan Penan Settlement where you are able to purchase the local handicraft made by the Penan tribe Go by boat to the CAVE OF THE WINDS with is tall, slender stalagmites, then on to the source of the CLEARWATER RIVER, see the underground river and visit the dry passage of the LADY’S CAVE. Swim at the Clearwater Spring. After picnic lunch at the Clearwater Pavilion, continue your journey by longtail boat to Kuala Berar or Long Litut. The 8km trek is through beautiful rainforest and along the Litut river to Melinau Camp (Camp 5) where we stay overnight.
- Day 5 Early breakfast. Begin the 2.4km steep trek to the Pinnacles viewpoint at 1750 m. Along this trail are many orchids, pitcher plants and tiny Tree Shrews foraging for food. The pinnacles of Mulu National Park are a collection of 45 meter high, limestone needles that cling to the side of Gunung Api (Volcano). The hike to the viewpoint overlooking the pinnacles is a tough and challenging mountain climb. However, trekkers are rewarded with a spectacular view of a silver-grey forest of stone, poking up through the surrounding jungle. Return to Camp 5 for a refreshing swim and another overnight stay.
- Day 6 0730 hrs, breakfast. Walk through lowland forest. The Headhunters’ Trail to Terikan River, then boat down the Terikan River and Medalam Rivers to Bala Lasong Longhouse. When head-hunting was as its height, a hundred years ago, Kayan war parties from the Baram River made their way through the Mulu area to attack Murut longhouse and Chinese farmers along the Limbang River Paddling their war canoes up the Melinau River to the Melinau Gorge, they dragged them 3 km overland to the headwaters of the Terikan River, a tributary of the Limbang. The “Kayan Road” – a 4m wide trail with poles laid across it to facilitate dragging the boats has disappeared without trace, but you can still see the canal thy dug around Batu Rikan, where the Terikan river goes through a cave the hill. Overnight at the Iban Longhouse.
- Day 7 After breakfast at the longhouse, hence by boat to Kuala Mendamit then overland transfer to Limbang Airport for your departure flight to Miri. Upon arrival in Miri, you will be met & transferred to Miri Marriots Resort & Spa. Dinner & overnight in the resort.
- Day 8 Breakfast. Pick-up for a half-day Miri City Tour. Lunch in the resort. Rest of the afternoon free at own leisure. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in the resort.
- Day 9 Breakfast. Transfer to Miri Airport for your onward flight to Kota Kinabalu. Upon arrival, you will be met and transfer to Hyatt Regency Kinabalu. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in the hotel.
- Day 10 Early morning pick up from hotel lobby for a 2hr drive to the World Heritage site of Kinabalu National Park. En route, make a stop at Nabalu village to savors local fruits and to bargain prices for the handicrafts. Upon arrive Kinabalu Park, check into your accommodation. Enjoy the cool & fresh air at the Park. Overnight stay at the Kinabalu Park Lodge. Lunch & dinner will be serving at Park restaurant.
- Day 11 Breakfast at Park restaurant, then registered with park head office for the trekking arrangement. After that together with you mountain guide will be transfer to the starting point (Timpohon Gate) for the journey begun. The packed lunch can be consumed along the way as the trekking will take about 6-7 hours. Upon reaching 11,000 feet, check-into Mountain rest house. Dinner at rest house restaurant. Overnight at Mountain Hut
- Day 12 Before sunrise, wake up at about 0200 hours in the morning & start trekking up to the summit of Mount Kinabalu. The trekking will take about 3-4 hours. At 0600 hours, you will witness the glorious sunrise over the majestic Mount Kinabalu. Descend to Laban Rata. Breakfast at the rest house restaurant. Check-out and trekking down to the Timpohon Gate. Transfer back to park HQ to collect your very own Certificate of Achievement. Lunch at Park restaurant. After lunch, transfer by road to Gomantong Birdnest Caves. Upon arrival, 15 minutes walk on the plank walk to the cave. Explore the largest bird's nest cave in Sabah, home to millions of Bats and swiflets. The nest of the swiflets are collected for the famous Chinese edible bird nest soup. Continue journey to Sukau which will passing by Oil Palm Plantations and villages. Check in Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and lunch provided. Late in the afternoon, take a boat cruise with electric motor to the famous of Menanggul River in search for Proboscis Monkeys, different species of birds and others wildlife. Return Lodge for dinner. Video Show. Lunch & dinner at the lodge. Overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.
- Day 13 Wake up by the calls of gibbons and hornbills. After breakfast, 0700 depart overland to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center. At this center, observe man’s closest relative “the Orang Utan” being rehabilitated to become wild in their natural habitat and experience a walk in the Tropical Lowland Dipterocarp Forest of Borneo. 1000hrs witness the feeding of the Orang Utan at the feeding platform. Depart centre return to Sandakan drive up hill to the Puh Jih Syh Chinese Buddhist Temple, which offers a panoramic view of the Sandakan Bay. Lunch at Agnes Keith. After lunch transfer to Sabah Hotel. Dinner & overnight in the hotel.
- Day 14 Transfer to jetty for boat ride to Selingan Turtle Islands Park. The journey to Island will take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Upon arrival, register at Turtle Island Parks HQ and check into chalet. After lunch at cafeteria, free at own leisure e.g swimming or snorkeling. After dinner, wait for rangers call to observe turtle laying eggs. Transfer the eggs to the hatchery and if there are young turtle hatchlings, an opportunity to observe the release of baby turtles to the open sea.. Lunch & dinner in the island. Overnight at Chalet (Common or Attached Bathroom).
- Day 15 Breakfast; Return to Sandakan and fly to Kota Kinabalu where you will be met and transferred to The Magellan Sutera, Sutera Harbour Resort & Spa.Free at leisure. Overnight.
- Day 16 Breakfast. Free until pick-up for departure transfer to airport for your onward flight.
