The White Hmong tribal village of Khun Chang Kien is located in the vicinity of Doi (=mountain) Suthep and accessible by pick-up truck. Here you see the Hmong in their colorful costumes selling their wide range of antiques, decorative ornaments and fabrics. The villagers now earn their living by planting vegetables and growing fruit, having replaced their traditional cash crop – the opium poppy. Drive to the temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, located 1056 meters above sea level. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is certainly one of the most important temples in Chiang Mai, as well as one of the most revered among Thai Buddhists and a major pilgrimage destination during Buddhist holidays. To reach the temple itself requires a climb up a Naga staircase of 290 steps. For the faint of heart, there's also a funicular cable-car to the top. On clear days the views of the surrounding area are a rewarding sight.
