Magelang, city in southwestern Indonesia, on the island of Java, in the Praga River highlands between Mount Merapi and Mount Sumbing near Yogyakarta. A road junction on a railroad, the city is the trade center for a rich agricultural area producing sugar, rice, corn, cassava, and tobacco. Textile milling is the chief industry.
