Sporting activities are part of the attraction of Hong Kong, although it is seldom mentioned. Nonetheless, there are a number of very keen enthusiasts who do participate in events like fencing, basketball, windsurfing, golf, snooker, and more. Hong Kong's varied natural environment, along with its superb recreational facilities allows visitors to take part in these activities.

Watersports

Watersports enthusiasts will be delighted with the array of water-related activities Hong Kong has to offer. From diving to water-skiing and windsurfing, many private and public facilities at beaches and marinas around Hong Kong cater to both local and foreign visitors alike.

Among the popular venues are: Deep Water Bay Speed Boat Co. Ltd. (water-skiing) - 2812 0391, Bunn's Divers Institute (diving) - 2574 7951, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (sailing) - 2832 2817, and Cheung Chau Windsurfing Centre (windsurfing) - 2981 8316. Information for renting watersports equipment are available at HKTA (2508 1234) or even at beachside stores and hotels in Stanley and Sai Kung.

Tennis

Tennis games are easily accessible everywhere in Hong Kong. Public courts are open to visitors, but reservations should be made beforehand to avoid disappointment. The recent Salem Open Tennis Championships were held in Hong Kong, and even top seed Michael Chang had participated in this renowned tournament. For court bookings, call the Victoria Park booking office (2570 6186), the Tennis Centre at Wong Nai Chung Gap Road (2574 9122), or the King's Park in Kowloon (2388 8154).

Golf

Golf is one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong. The best way to access the city's golf facilities is through the HKTA's Sports and Recreation Tour, which organizes tours to various golf clubs at a reasonable fee. The tour gives visitors access to the private 18-hole Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club course (2719 1595) and the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, which is reputed to be one of Asia's oldest golf courses (2670 1211).

The tour also includes packages to The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course (2791 3388), which is inexpensive, boasts a stunning island location, and was designed by Gary Player. Other courses are located at Discovery Bay (2987 7273) and at Deep Water Bay (2812 7070). Most golf courses are open to visitors on weekdays only.

Rock Climbing / Hiking

Hong Kong has its share of picturesque mountains and hillsides that await rock climbing enthusiasts. Two choices of either indoor or outdoor climbing gyms are available. Enthusiasts can call the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union at 2504 8124 for more details.

Approximately 40 percent of Hong Kong are made into 23 country parks, many of which are threaded with well-marked trails. The perfect therapy for city blues would be to hold barbecues and picnics at sites near the waterfalls and streams. Bowen Road, in Hong Kong Island, is a flat-paved path that goes through tropical foliage with glimpses of the city skyline and is excellent for a relaxing walk or jog. Along the way is Lovers' Rock, a nine meter high granite monolith worshipped by those in search of romance.

The walk around The Peak on Harlech and Lugard roads offers spectacular views of the harbor, Aberdeen, and the outlying islands. This 3.5km stroll takes about 45 minutes to complete. Lantau Trail, on the other hand, is a 70km path that displays Hong Kong's rugged landscape and some superb views. The trail is divided into 12 stages, with Stage 4 starting near the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Visitors can call the HKTA Visitor Hotline (2508 1234) for additional information or view the HKTA free Five Walks brochure.

For ardent cyclists, the Tolo Harbour Cycling Track, which runs from Sha Tin to Tai Po, is worth a try as it is safe, easy, and scenic. Rental bikes are available at the track.
