Vietnam is not yet a shopping paradise
like Hong Kong or Bangkok , but there still a huge variety of souvenirs
and traditional handicrafts (mostly lacquer ware ). The most popular items
for foreigners are the remains from the Vietnam War-Army watches - clothing
- compasses and all kinds of military equipment left behind by the US
Army over 20 years ago . Vietnam is hoping to become a signatory of GATT
so these low prices may not last forever . Jewelry is available but extreme
care must be taken to ensure the quality of any piece . Vietnamese are
very skilled jewelry makers but sometimes the gold or stones are of inferior
quality . The best place for shopping for antiques or replicas is in Hanoi
. As with most countries , the Vietnamese Government does not allow the
export of any item of historic or cultural significance . Saigon has the
best buys for modern goods like CDs and clothing.
