Time Differences

The time difference between Hong Kong and the Greenwich Mean Time is eight hours.

Health/ Medical Services

Tourists need not necessarily have vaccinations prior to arriving in Hong Kong. However, as Asia is notorious for the Hepatitis A and B diseases, it is wise to take precautions

Never drink from the tap in Hong Kong and avoid eating food from street stalls that are filthy because of the low level of hygiene. Bottled water is available at convenience stores or in the hotel. Be sure to boil water using electric pots supplied in each room before drinking.

In case of emergencies, there are a few numbers that you can call. For police, fire, and ambulance services in Hong Kong, dial 999. For medical services:

No. 40 Stubbs Rd, Happy Valley.

Tipping

Tipping is a custom in Hong Kong. Most hotels and restaurants include a 10% service charge to the bill, but for those that do not include service charges, a 10% tip is adequate. Those who were given excellent service may opt to give small tips of HK$10-20 to well-deserved workers at hotels or restaurants. Taxi drivers are normally not tipped, but do not hope to receive small amounts of change from them. It is best that you round up the fare to the nearest dollar.

Postal Services

Main post offices are located on Hong Kong Island next to the Star Ferry Pier, and in Kowloon at 10 Middle Road, Tsim Tsa Tsui. Postal services here are relatively inexpensive and efficient. Sending a postcard overseas would only cost HK$2.50 to HK$3.10. Fast posts are also available at a reasonable fee.

Both the main post offices operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays to Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. For inquiries, call 2921 2222.
