Taiwan, otherwise known as the Asian Tiger, ranks third in the world in terms of foreign currency reserves, after Japan and China. The economy is a free market economy, and the world's 15th largest trading nation. GNP per capita in Taiwan is approximately US$13,200.

During June 1998, the labor force in Taiwan amounted to 9.5 million, while the unemployment rate was 2.7 percent. In the 9.5 million employed, 45 percent are women over the age of 15. Women exercise fair rights as men, which also amounts to equal pay.
